Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS)

If a child doesn’t know how to read, we teach.
If a child doesn't know how to swim, we teach.
If a child doesn't know how to multiply, we teach.
If a child doesn't know how to drive, we teach.
If a child doesn't know how to behave, we...teach?...punish?

Why can't we finish the last sentence as automatically as we do the others?
-Tom Herner, President of the National Association of State Directors of Special Education

What is PBIS?

  • PBIS is a way for schools to encourage good behavior.
  • With PBIS, schools teach kids about behavior, just as they would teach about other subjects like reading or math.
  • The focus of PBIS is prevention, not punishment.
