Arts in Action Community Charter School is the first charter school opened and operated by Schools in Action. Arts in Action is a (K-5) elementary school committed to serving primarily students of low socio-economic status who reside in the attendance area of underperforming non-charter public schools. The school’s mission is “to empower, prepare, and inspire urban students to achieve their highest potential and become active citizens who work toward building a more just, humane, and sustainable world by providing a democratic arts enriched and nurturing school environment.” Schools in Action opened a 6th-8th grade middle school in the Fall of 2016.
Schools in Action became a School Food Authority (SFA) in 2011 upon opening Arts in Action Community Charter School. In 2013, Schools in Action added the Child and Adult Care Food Program’s (CACFP) Supper Program to the student food services. Through this program, Schools in Action is amongst a handful of charter schools that serve nutritious, hot meals to students participating in after school programs. In addition, Schools in Action has successfully passed an audit for the National School Food Program (NSLP) and an audit for the CACFP program with no adverse findings. In 2015 Schools in Action expanded its services to provide eleven charter schools with SFA services, and to administer the commodities food program for participating schools. Schools in Action is also assisting individual charter schools with NSLP audits, applications for the Supper Program, and training for on-site personnel. Currently, Schools in Action provides meal services for almost thirty schools across the state of California.
